You wear your heart on the sleeve, and I wear mine on yours; happy birthday Jackson Wang

Passionate, loving, and definitely misunderstood.

He, whom started out as an athlete ready to shoot for the stars, gave it all away when he decided to pursue his other passion: singing. He started from the bottom and worked his way up, both in the fencing world and in the entertainment industry and it’s probably clear by now that he was born to be in the light, to be loved and to love.

Turning 24 this year (25 in Korean age), Jackson’s passion has led him to not only walk on the existing paths, but to create his own path and leave behind a trail. Still actively promoting with his group, Jackson set up his own studio in Mainland China to handle his activities there: a feat that is rare in the Korean entertainment industry. He doesn’t let precedence stop him from doing what he wants to, and he gets up and works for it.

While passion may be able to drive one towards his ambitions, not a lot can be done without love. And love is something that Jackson is undeniably rich in. Love for his job, his life, his family, his members, his staff and of course, his fans. One will be hard-pressed to find any instance of his action that is not motivated by love, and you’re often left wondering how someone has so much love in his heart. In the same vein, because he gives so much, he (quietly, ahem) wants to be loved in return and that is exactly what the GOT7 members do. Often dubbed as ‘Wang Princess’ in the team, they love and adore him unconditionally. They are his little cheerleaders and soldiers behind him every step of the way, be it for his personal life or his career.

But maybe it is also because of his standing in spotlight that he is under scrutiny more than most.  His every move is amplified and blown up by the media, fans and public alike. The vengeful watchful eyes don’t rest and they feast on every slight move that isn’t in line with the ‘appropriate’ behaviour. But as much as the weight of the burden lies on his shoulders, there is one thing that Jackson does not, and will not do: be someone else.

You don't love someone because they're perfect, you love them in spite of the fact that they're not.

Jodi Picoult

And probably that’s why this love is so real. Because you’re a human with flaws and loving you is loving someone who is real, loving someone who is trying to be his best every single day. You don’t put on airs, you don’t try to be someone else. You are unapologetically you even through the storms. You are the one we choose to love, the one we choose to protect. The one we want to give everything to. Yet in all our efforts, we always seem to fall short.

It’s hard to fathom how you could stand tall against the worst words of others. It’s harder to understand how even when the dust settles and all is said and done, all you have is gratitude and understanding for the people who have thrown the rocks that penetrated through your heart. It hurts to know that even when we try to comfort you with our love, it is undeniably the scarred-you and your love for us that makes everything alright in the end.

The road ahead will be hard, maybe even harder than it has been (but it was you who said that nothing in life is easy, because if it was, then everyone would be successful, did you not?). We don’t know how you do it, but we will try to love you just as much as you do us, if not more, so that one day even the words of others can’t penetrate through the wall of love we build around you.

Happy birthday Jackson. Spread your wings (or your lil paws, you puppy) and we’ll be behind you flapping our wings, watching over you, protecting you. Because you deserve the world and more.
